米西部カリフォルニア州サンフランシスコ市は１４日までに、市庁舎付近に設置されている先住民を虐待する様子を表現した１９世紀の銅像を「差別的」として近く撤去することを決めた。地元紙サンフランシスコ・クロニクルなどが伝えた。先住民の活動家の訴えを受けて議論が続いていた。
報道によると、問題となっていたのは同州の成り立ちを伝えるモニュメントの一つ。カウボーイとカトリック伝道者が先住民を踏み付けている場面を表現した銅像で、ゴールドラッシュ時の入植者を描いた銅像などと並び観光スポットにもなっていた。
市当局は「早急に撤去する」としているが、具体的なスケジュールは不明。先住民の活動家は地元紙に「三十数年の時間がかかったが、素晴らしい」と評価した。一部博物館などが受け入れに興味を示しているという。
米国では先住民の権利向上を求める声が高まっており、米大陸に到達した探検家コロンブスを先住民の虐殺者とする見方も拡大している。（共同）
