　それによるとソウル大病院の医者は「韓国人は生活に追われ脳が疲れている。脳が疲労すると不安感が高まり、問題を深刻に考え、過剰反応して理性を失う」という。また社会学者は「韓国人は儒教社会の特性である“生きてなんぼ”という現世主義が強い。そのため健康や食品に敏感だ。これに不景気や失業、受験競争など社会的不安感が加わり過剰な恐怖心を生む」という。

　メディア論の学者は「情報通信網が発達したネット社会では正体不明の話が瞬時に広がり、人びとは“恐怖メッセージ”に感染し、反論はいつも後手になる」というが結局、「政府発表など公的なものを信じたがらない不信社会はウワサに弱い」ということだろう。

　報道によると、夫婦は7月始めから少なくとも4回以上にわたり、韓国人留学生6人に酒を飲ませた上、罰ゲームと称して留学生にわいせつな行為をしていた。罰ゲームでは、ゲームをして負けた人が服を一枚ずつ脱ぐものや、留学生同士でのキス、互いの身体を触るなどの行為があったという。

　留学生が学校の職員に「ホームステイで虐待されている」と被害を訴え、事件が発覚した。

　夫婦はインターネットで米国でのホームステイを希望する韓国人を募集し、留学生の保護者から年間1万5000ドル（約140万円）の費用を受け取っていた。夫婦のホスト歴は長く、警察はほかにも被害者がいるとみて捜査している。

　米国メディアは今回の事件を大きく報じると共に、アジアの教育熱が背景にあるとの見方を伝えている。ある警察官は現地メディアに、「夫婦は、子どもたちにより良い人生を送らせたいと願う親の欲望を利用した」と指摘した。ホームステイのコーディネーターは「このような事件は初めて聞いた」としながらも、「被害に遭った学生たちは、中国、インド、韓国から米国にやってきたほかの学生たちと同じような状況にあるようだ」と話した。

　被害に遭った留学生らは、帰国せず、韓国領事館のサポートを受けながら新しい生活場所を探しているという。

　一方、ジョージア州グイネット郡地裁は18日、夫婦の保釈申請を棄却した。犯罪内容が凶悪であることや、夫婦が逃走する可能性があると判断した。

　地裁はまた、カメラの撮影や法廷での中継を特別に許可した。韓国メディアは地裁の決定について、「事件に対する地域社会の高い関心を反映したもの」との見方を伝えた
